PartnersCommunity connections are an important part of what we do. Since setting up shop in North Adams, we’ve worked with a wide range of cultural and community organizations. Inkberry is proud to count the following fine organizations among its partners: Benchmark Kitchens is a kitchen and bath remodeling firm located in North Adams, Massachusetts that serves customers in Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York. Inkberry and Benchmark Kitchens presented a “Books Make the Best Eating” book discussion group. The group met at Inkberry to discuss various pieces of food writing, and then used the facilities at Benchmark Kitchens to try out their new recipes. The Contemporary Artist?s Center (The CAC) is a non-for-profit artists’ studio facility established in 1990 by working artists for working artists. Through its artists’ residencies, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and performances, the CAC seeks to promote the creation and appreciation of contemporary art. The Beaver Mill, home of the CAC, is a 130,000 sq ft historic brick and stone mill situated on 27 acres of woodland and adjoining the Natural Bridge State Park in North Adams, Massachusetts. The CAC has hosted a number of Inkberry readings, and also collaborated with Inkberry to produce a one-day workshop on ecphrastic literature. The Eclipse Mill is a historic former mill building that was recently converted into spacious residential studio lofts. The Mill complex houses forty painters, writers, photographers, sculptors, illustrators, musicians, dancers, potters, weavers, and filmmakers. Artists live and work in their own private spacious studio space, which is also home to several larger galleries and performance spaces. Inkberry will be presenting Andrea Barrett and Jill Gilbreth in an evening of original work at the Mill’s gallery space in March of 2006. Elizabeth Freeman Center is a non-profit, county-wide agency that provides counseling, advocacy, emotional, educational, vocational, and economic services, and fosters social change. We oppose violence, harassment, and discrimination, and we promote the physical and emotional safety of all people. We strive to provide a haven and a communication network for all people, regardless of gender, age, race, color, class, religion, or sexual orientation. Frog Lotus Yoga is a spacious, visually stunning yoga studio located in the Beaver Mill complex in North Adams, Massachusetts, offering a variety of classes, ranging from meditation to yoga to Pilates. Inkberry presented a reading at the Frog Lotus studio as part of our Celebration of Poetry in 2005. The Hoosic River Watershed Association (HooRWA) is the citizens’ group that looks after the Hoosic River. They are dedicated to the restoration, conservation and enjoyment of the Hoosic River and its watershed, through education, research, and advocacy. With widespread support from the local community, they have promoted awareness and appreciation for the river with hikes, lectures, workshops, river cleanups, festivals, and conferences, and implemented environmental education programs in many schools. Inkberry and HooRWA sponsor an annual River Writing contest for local middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults. For more information, please consult the HooWRA website. Located in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Images Cinema is a non-profit community movie theater that presents a wide range of independent, foreign and classic films which impact filmmaking and our culture. Images Cinema is dedicated to the exploration of film as an art form, a source of entertainment and an educational tool. Inkberry and Images have co-presented a number of book-and-movie discussion groups that examine the translation from page to film, most notably a Tolkien group that coincided with the release of the Lord of the Rings films. Kidspace, located on the 3rd floor of MASS MoCA, is a free contemporary art gallery for children and adults alike. In addition to youth-oriented gallery space, KidSpace also offers many after-school programs for local schoolchildren, and works extensively with local public school teachers to integrate art into the classroom experience. Located in North Adams, Massachusetts, The Main Street Stage is a year-round performance space and community committed to developing local talent and new scripts, as well as producing cutting edge contemporary plays. Their goal is to produce not-for-profit theater with a conscience that will help to build community and improve the fabric of contemporary life. Inkberry’s very first reading, with poet Donald Hall, was held at the Main Street Stage, and we have also collaboated on a one-act playwriting workshop. Housed in a vast 13 acre, 19th century factory campus, MASS MoCA presents world class and cutting-edge visual, performing, and new media arts. It encourages dynamic interchange between making and presenting art, between the visual and performing arts, and between its extraordinary historic factory campus and the patrons, workers and tenants who again inhabit it. MASS MoCA also works hard to position the arts as a vibrant catalyst for community revitalization; the creation of new markets, good jobs and the long-term enrichment of a region in economic need is one of the museum?s driving purposes. Mass MoCA has hosted many Inkberry workshops, and plans for future collaboration on an ecphrastic writing workshop are in the works. With MCLA, Inkberry will present a visit with author and journalist John Dicker in March of 2006. MCLA Center for Service and Citizenship The REACH Community Health Foundation creates and maintains several avenues of programming designed to encourage elder residents of Berkshire County to remain healthy, active and involved in their communities. Inkberry partnered with REACH to create the Stories of Strength program for breast cancer patients and survivors. To date that program has taken the form of an oral history project and a journal workshop. Bio coming soon! The Family Beat is a monthly publication for families with young children in the Berkshires. Inkberry and The Family Beat presented an interactive visit with children’s author Jeannine Atkins, which involved a reading from her book, Robin’s Home, and an exporation of the robin’s habitat. The Railway Cafe at Gallery 51 provides a venue for local artists to perform on a local stage. Inkberry and the Railway Cafe co-presented an evening with Ken Waldman, Alaska’s fiddling poet. UNITY was created in 1994 as a forum for youth in North Berkshire. The program was established as a collaboration between the NBCC and the area’s middle schools and high schools, bringing together students from across town boundaries to address issues that are important to them. Today, UNITY promotes youth expression, development, and involvement in the North Berkshire community through discussion, leadership, community service projects, and the arts. With the Williams English Department, Inkberry has presented several events to the community, including poet David Lehman, essayist Phillip Lopate. With the Williams Chaplain’s Office, Inkberry presented a reading by poet Jack Gilbert, as part of our Community Renewal and Sense of Space programming in 2005, and will co-present the Reverend Bert Marshall and his recitatoin of the Gospel of St Mark in March of 2006. http://www.williams.edu/Chaplain/ The Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation (WRLF) is a non-profit, member-supported land trust. The Foundation has been working with the community to preserve and protect the rural New England Character and unique landscapes of the Williamstown area since 1986. WRLF identifies and preserves special natural areas, encourages responsible development and involves the community in planning for the future through education and outreach. In 2005, Inkberry and the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation presented a weekend with Verlyn Klinkenborg as part of Inkberry’s Community Renewal and Sense of Place program.
