The inkberry is an evergreen holly native (like our organization) to New England. Known colloquially as winterberry, gallberry and pokeberry, it exists in several varieties. It is possible to make tea from the leaves.
Inkberries flourish, according to one gardening source, "even by roadsides and in waste places." Even in poor soil, the inkberry can put down roots and bear fruit. We think that's a pretty neat metaphor for the writing life.
